Asphalt shingles are the most affordable roofing material available on the market—and that’s why they dominate the roofing materials market. Just take a quick walk through your neighborhood, you’re sure to see asphalt shingles cladding roof after roof. That said, there are plenty of pros and cons to asphalt shingles. Let’s take a look…
The Benefits of Asphalt Shingles
As we mentioned, asphalt shingles are at the top of the list for the least expensive roofing material, but the benefits don’t stop there. Asphalt shingles are fast to install, they’re available in a variety of designs (more about that below), they’re resistant to impact and high-winds, and modern asphalt shingles are fire resistant. In short, asphalt shingles get the job done, and you won’t have to shell out a pretty penny to install this roofing material.
Weighing the Costs
Unfortunately, asphalt shingles are not the longest lasting roofing material on the market. You may have to have your shingles replaced every decade or so to ensure that your roof isn’t compromised by moisture. Be sure to check the expected lifetime of the shingles that you’re purchasing, and weigh the investment in your shingles versus the longevity of those shingles. Ask yourself: Is it worth it to pay a premium for durable asphalt shingles (or an even more durable material), or will inexpensive shingles do the trick for now? While it may cost you five times as much money to invest in a slate tile roof up front, your roof might protect your home for five times as long.
If you just need a temporary solution for your roof, asphalt shingles are a perfectly adequate solution.
Current homeowners be wary! Keep an eye on your asphalt roof. If you notice curled asphalt shingles, missing shingles, or excessive accumulation of granules in your gutter, it may be time to have your roof repaired (don’t worry, we provide roofing repairs as well as roofing installation services).
Asphalt shingles can be bought in any number of colors and patterns. Manufacturers make their catalogs quite diverse these days, in order to cater to clients’ individual preferences. You can find the perfect shingles to fit the look of your home. Our advice: match your shingles to the trim and siding of your home. Tan shingles look great with red brick homes. Black or grey shingles contrast against white or lighter colored homes. Darker brown shingles look great with a variety of home colors. Get a hold of a sample to see what looks best with your home.
