The Limited Lifetime Warranty has become an industry standard term for asphalt roofing shingles. Shingles manufactured in the past were warrantied for a specified number of years, such as a 30-year shingle. GAF coined the term limited lifetime warranty for their asphalt roofing shingles, and soon the industry followed. Limited Lifetime Warranty usually refers to the manufacturers warranty on defective shingles. Each shingle company prorates the settlement pay out, based on the age of the shingles at the time of the claim, on any defective shingles. So although the shingles have a “lifetime warranty” your entire investment is not warrantied quite that long.

These limited lifetime warranties do not include any warranties on workmanship for the roofing contractor.  In conjunction with the manufactures warranties; roofing companies typically offer a workmanship warranty that warrants their workmanship to be free from leaks for a specified number of years. These warranties, if offered by a roofing contractor at all, vary greatly from company to company.

All roofing manufactures offer contractor programs where roofing contractors are screened, trained and approved to install roofing systems with the option to give upgraded warranties to consumers honored directly through the roofing manufacturer. For example, Owens Corning has a Preferred Contractors Program, where trained contractors can offer customers a new shingle roofing system with a Preferred Protection Roofing System Warranty. This warranty protects customers on all Owens Corning products used in the new roofing system. Defects are covered for 50 years and are non-prorated, and workmanship is covered for ten years, which includes labor, waste and new material.

Each shingle manufacturer has its own program to help consumers gain added value to their investment. Roofing systems, when installed properly can become an asset to your home. Warranties are only there for unforeseen circumstances, and with added protection you can never go wrong. Understanding your warranties is a crucial part to your new roofing system purchase.
